THE STORY BEHIND ADDY'S

Addys was the first authentic public Dutch Cafe & Restaurant in America. It was born from my desire to capture the flavor of Holland's old cafe. In Holland the old cafe ( called "brown cafe ") provides a place for seeing old friends or meeting new and interesting people and just having an enjoyable time talking, eating, and ( of course ) drinking. The brown cafes are comfortable and relaxing--like an extension of your own home.

I had missed this way of socializing since coming to Greenville, so one day I decided to create an authentic Dutch Cafe in Greenville so I could have fun with my friends here just as in Amsterdam. All my friends liked the idea and gave me a lot of support.
First, I had to find a building that reminded me of home. After I found it here on Coffee Street, a year was spent on remodeling to give it just the right touch. Now I'm proud to give to you as close a resemblance to an Authentic Dutch Cafe as I can.

This story could never have been written had it not been for the help of some extremely good friends and family who gave me overwhelming support. Friends from Holland and Germany who were here on vacation stayed here and helped with the work instead of going to the beach or mountains. I'd also like to give special thanks to their wives and girlfriends because they had great patience about the time taken away from them to work here.

It is sad in some ways that the chapter of working on the building with friends until late at night is over, because not only did we work hard, but we had a lot of fun (and drinks) too. We hope you, too, will richly enjoy the experience we've tried to create.
